The Bridge Road Warriors: Esplanade Bridge Center

Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash

I’ve been everywhere, man.

I’ve been everywhere, man.
Crossed the deserts bare, man.
I’ve breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I’ve had my share, man.
I’ve been everywhere.

I am certain that Johnny Cash wrote this song with a Bridge Road Warrior in mind.

After a disappointing last match in the Sunday Swiss which dropped us from 1st to 3rd, I headed to a bridge club a half hour away to make 19 board sets (our parent company, Tournament Bridge Services, llc, contracts out to provides this service to clubs,  teachers, tournaments and Units, throughout Orange and San Diego counties), while a few members of the Great American Bridge Tour head home, and a few more to dinner and the hotel for a brief rest.

It has been a very successful week, with TOUR teams garnering five wins, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds along with nine more top ten finishes and one new Lifemaster. Orange County is about an hour from the Esplanade Bridge Center, our training facility in Solana Beach, California:

where Director of Operations Donna Wood runs games and coordinates our Tournament Preparation School. Anna and I take up residence there ten to twelve days a month for advanced, highly focused training. Some of our students nicknamed it “Bridge Boot Camp”. It is a fitting description.

But the alarm rang true and loud at 02:45 and at 03:25 Jim Looby, Bjorgvin Mar Kristinsson and yours truly were making the 45 minute drive to LAX. On the plane to Salt Lake City, UT at 06:00 with a change for Albuquerque.

Karen Lee Barrett & Gay Parrish

When we arrive there, we meet up with Anne Dawson, Jeff Roman, Jim Jacobson and my wife, Karen Lee Barrett. We grab our rental cars and drive 3 hours to Taos, New Mexico.

And then we play at 19:00.

Just another day in the office.
