The past few weeks have been my “reset” time. The end of the year and its transition to the new one is never a smooth one. I had not finished Kansas City (Overland Park)  and the celebration of New Year’s Eve before I headed out on the road again. The tournament cycle begins anew.

For decades Bermuda has been my home for at least eight days a year. My attendance at the annual [ilink url=”http://www.bermudaregional.com/”]Bermuda Regional[/ilink] held there has been a given for so long, that I am only asked who my team will be this year.

We stay at the Pompano Beach Club, a magnificent family run property that was first introduced to me by the New England Champion Margie Sullivan. The kitchen is spectacular and the hotel is lovely. The facility provides a highly welcome respite from the normal tournament grind.

Bermuda is in a class by itself, though it was not always so, for other tournaments had the formal attire and prize giving in the past. In many ways, Bermuda is a return to the style of tournaments from yesteryear, though to be fair, Bermuda never lost that charm. Our team dresses the part, wearing our finery during the four formal evenings – I love the way my wife looks in her evening gown – enjoying the camaraderie of fellow lovers of our game as we all pay respect to the events of the week. For this reason, I return year after year – and will continue to do so for as long as I can travel.

It is a storied tournament – last year my team won a trophy that was first captured by Helen Sobel, Charles Goren and the Solomons – with a proud history of great players, personalities and characters.

It will be our pleasure to again compete at this exceptional gathering of great players and friends as we raise the national drink of our host Nation – the aptly named Dark and Stormy – in toast to their hospitality and commitment to providing another amazing week of bridge.

Jade was feted with the Bermuda Ministry of Tourism Award in 2012 for his over 30 years of support for the Island of Bermuda and the Bermuda Regional. It seems fitting that he Captained the winners of the Mixed flight of the Transnational Open Teams at the 2000 Bermuda Bowl.
