Bridge & Humor: Laugh at your errors by A. Sheinwold

The Dispatch – 6 Jul 1979

Laugh at your errors when you play bridge, and you’ll never run out of things to laugh at.

Lead: 2

Today’s South captured the jack of clubs and ran three spades to discard the six of diamonds. Then he led a trump, losing to the queen. West cashed the ace of diamonds but saw this would get him nowhere when South’s king fell. West therefore led his last spade, and East was clever enough to ruff with the king of hearts. West’s ace of hearts later took the setting trick.

PREDICTABLE

When you stop laughing you’ll see that South should make the contract. Since what happened to him was completely predictable, South should not lead trumps after taking the three top spades. Instead, he should lead dummy’s low spade and discard the king of diamonds. After that simple exchange, South needs only the 2-2 trump break to make his contract.
