“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours” – Henry David Thoreau

The disadvantage of the redeye flight to the East Coast is that after the requisite nap I find myself unable to sleep the next night. Yet that is not all bad, for it gives me time with my thoughts, allowing me to consider methods, circumstances and theory during the quietest time of the day.

And sometimes I just stay up.

During these periods of insomnia, I have made friends with many third shift hotel desk clerks over the years, as I often find myself haunting the business center during the wee hours. I often appreciate their company, as more than a few of them have a great story to share. Yet, even with the conversation, I find myself drifting back to thinking about the game, revisiting my preconceived notions and the lessons of the day just passed.

Over the years, even when I sleep I envision theory. In fact some of my best system work has come with my dreams, and so I pay attention even when my eyes are closed. I have come to realize that these times of rest provide the opportunity for the subconscious thought to surface, and I must be prepared to recognize and record it. It might create a paradigm shift in my belief set.

Then again, it might just be another nightmare.
