Wroclaw 2013: Junior Championship Board 6, Round 1

July, 12 2013

The 24th European Youth Team Championships 2013 are being played in Wroclaw, Poland and today began the Round Robin of the Junior Category. The Board number 6 of the first RR match produced interesting swings in 9 of the 11 tables that are playing the event. Let’s see what happened in the table that confronted two North European countries: Denmark vs Sweden, which ended with the victory of Denmark 14.01 to 5.99. These were the teams formations in the open and closed rooms.

RIMSTEDT Cecilia BILDE Majka Cilleborg
JEPSEN Emil BILDE Dennis GULLBERG Daniel KARLSSON Johan
GRONKVIST Ida JEPSEN Peter

After hearing a pass, Jepsen of Denmark opened its hand with a 1 bid, the hand meets the Rule of 20 and also has a comfortable redeclaration after any major response .

Gullberg in West took the opportunity to show his six-card suit of spades and Bilde in North showed his sixth hearts with a forcing voice. East now with a four cards weak support in his partner’s suit decided to named them at the 3 level.

Jepsen chose to pass to demonstrate weak opening values and West adding his 9 points to the few showed by his partner and seeing his heart shortness, concluded that N / S had to have game if they had fit in heart and closed the spade game in what he certainly believed it was a sacrifice.

Bilde convinced that they had no heart fit and with favorable vulnerability, chose the double … Final Contract: 4X.

The E/W hands fit better than a glove and the partnership ended scoring +790, fulfilling their contract after losing a spade, a heart, and a diamond … as we say in our family: sacrifice…nothing…

At the other table the auction was similar but Cecilia Rimstedt in North evaluated her hand in a different way and produced a 12 Imps swing for her team.

Again South opened 1 and West showed his spades with 1. Cecilia chose to double, showing hearts and values.

Bilde showed his 4 cards weak support. South showed his minimum opening and here also, West did the math and sacrificed with 4.

But now Cecilia seeing that partner had a singleton or a void in spades and so many chances for heart cards instead of a double competed to 5

Declarer was unable to make her contract: one down … but scored 12 IMPs.

These are the results of the same board in all the tables:
