The team is named in honor of Salvador Assael, who died of a heart attack during the world championships in Lille, France, in 2012. Assael and Nafiz Zorlu won the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 2001. Team Assael is Mustafa Cem Tokay of Istanbul, Antonio Sementa, Parma, Italy, and Josef Piekarek and Alexander Smirnov, both of Germany. Their next opponents are Team Monaco. There was not as much drama in most of the other round-of-16 matches, the closest other matches being Martin Fleisher’s 124-106 defeat of Rose Meltzer and Connie Goldberg’s 123-103 win over Carolyn Lynch. Today’s other matchups, by captain, are John Diamond versus Bas Drijver, Connie Goldberg versus Martin Fleisher and James Cayne versus Team Lavazza.
