Passell-Quinn are Women’s Pairs champs
Nancy Passell and Shawn Quinn won the foursession Whitehead Women’s Pairs, parlaying a strong second final session into a two-board margin of victory. Passell of Plano TX and Quinn of Sugar Land TX are a new partnership, playing for the first time together in Orlando. In second were the mother-daughter duo of Gen Geiger and Gigi Simpson of Sarasota FL. This was the first victory in the Whitehead for either winner. After qualifying sixth in Tuesday’s opening round, Passell and Quinn posted a 58% in the first final session and a 66% in the second. Passell has three previous NABC titles – the last occurring 20 years ago – and one world title. Quinn has 23 NABC wins, and three world championship wins.
Meckstroth leads Player of the Year race
Jeff Meckstroth is maintaining his lead in the 2016 Player of the Year contest, awarded annually to the player who earns the most platinum points. Meckstroth came to the Orlando NABC as the 2016 leader in the contest based on his performance at the Spring NABC in Reno and Summer NABC in Washington DC. His total of 521.59 masterpoints from those two tournaments has been augmented in Orlando with his victory in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams.
Meckstroth’s unofficial total as of press time is more than 630 platinum points, which does not count any possible points he may earn from placing in the overalls of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, which he is playing in today with partner Eric Rodwell. Rodwell trails Meckstroth by more than 20 points. They are scheduled to play together on Nick Nickell’s squad in the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams which begins Friday. The next closest contestants in the Player of the Year race are Eric Greco, Zia Mahmood and Geoff Hampson. The unofficial total for each as of Wednesday evening is in the 515-to 520-point range. The giant platinumpoint prizes of the Blue Ribbon Pairs, the Reisinger and the Keohane North American Swiss – which will all be determined in the waning days of the Orlando NABC – could easily, of course, alter the outcome of the race.
Pavlicek, Munday leading Blue Ribbon
With two final sessions to play today, Richard Pavlicek and Jim Munday have a slim lead in the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs. Pavlicek, of Fort Lauderdale FL, and Munday, of Southaven MS, put together two solid semifinal sessions to take the lead. They scored 59.43% in the first session on Wednesday and 58.98% in the second. They are 17.33 matchpoints ahead of Mark Perlmutter, San Diego CA, and Wafik Abdou, Bakersfield CA with two sessions to play. Top is 38. Pavlicek and Munday are both seeking their second NABC+ pairs title. Pavlicek won the Nail Life Master Open Pairs with his son, Richard Jr., in 2004. Munday won the Fast Open Pairs with Larry Sealy in 2013. Pavlicek has 11 North American championships to his credit.
