Gromov wins Open BAM

The Russian-Polish squad captained by Andrew Gromov won the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams Monday night, posting a total of 38.04 wins. Gromov was playing with Aleksander Dubinin, both of Moscow, Russia, and Poles Krzysztof Buras, Grzegorz Narkiewicz, Jacek Kalita and Michal Nowosadzki. In second with 37.02 was Michael Kamil’s team. Kamil of Santa Clara CA played with Stan Tulin of Boca Raton FL, Gary Cohler of Miami FL, Billy Cohen of Sherman Oaks CA, and Israelis Dror Padon and Alon Birman. Gromov, who had a carryover of 3.04 from the qualifying round, scored 17 wins in the first final session and 18 in the second.

 Deas takes Women’s BAM with huge final session

The team captain by Lynn Deas, lying sixth at the start of play on Monday, moved up to second after the first final session in the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams and won the event with a 76.92% game in the second final session. Deas played with Beth Palmer. Their teammates were Janice Seamon-Molson and Tobi
Sokolow. Second place went to the Phyllis Fireman squad, leaders after the first two session on Sunday. Fireman played with Shannon Cappelletti, Benedicte Cronier, Sylvie Willard, Marion Michielsen and Meike Wortel. The winners rallied from sixth place to move into second, trailing the Fireman team by 2.25 boards. Fireman had 16 out of 26 in the second final session, but Deas raced past them with 20 wins.

Taylor, Robinson take Super Senior crown

A pair of ACBL Board members won the Super Senior Pairs Monday evening, capturing the title in the event — restricted to players 70 and older — by two boards. Jeff Taylor, the former ACBL Board member representing District 20 (covering Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Nevada and Hawaii) and Craig Robinson, the current Board member representing District 4 (Central New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Southern New Jersey) and former ACBL preside nt (2011), won the foursession contest by a comfortable margin. The runners-up in the contest were Leonard Melander and Bert Newman. Taylor and Robinson were in second place after Sunday’s qualifying round, but their modest session scores of 56.08% and 61.54% were enough to see them into the winners circle. With the victory, the duo denied Ed Lazarus a fifth consecutive win in the contest. Lazarus had won the event from its debut in 2010 to 2013.

Gupta, Lynch in Senior KO final

Teams captained by Vinita Gupta and Carolyn Lynch rallied from halftime deficits to win their semifinal matches in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams. They will play a 64-board final today. Gupta is playing with Billy Miller, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Lew Stansby and Bart Bramley. The same lineup won the event last year in Phoenix. Lynch’s partner is Mike Passell. Their teammates are Marc Jacobus, Garey Hayden, Adam Zmudzinski and Cezary  Balicki.

Halfway through the match with the Dan Morse team, Gupta was on the wrong side of a 91-60 score. Gupta won the third set 50-27 to get to within 8 IMPs, then won the fourth quarter 61-28 to advance, 171-146. Lynch’s win was even more impressive. Down 35 at the halfway point against the Victor Markowicz team, Lynch closed the gap to 4 IMPs then and blitzed their opponents 62-1 in the fourth quarter to win 128-71.

The Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks with the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs (and now the new Platinum Pairs in the spring) as one of the most prestigious — and toughest — pair events
on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs and Platinum Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions. Entry is restricted to winners and runners-up in regional championships — plus high finishers in North American championships, members of current Grand National district championship teams, members of current official teams representing ACBL and the top 100 lifetime masterpoint holders.
