Senior KO in round of 16

Fielding the same team she fielded last year, Vinita Gupta is seeking her second straight win in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams in today’s round of 16. Gupta, seeded No. 1, is playing with Billy Miller, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Lew Stansby and Bart Bramley. Their opponents today are No. 16 TROMSO-2015, a Norwegian squad. That team made in from a four-way match, defeating the George Jacobs squad to advance with a bye in the evening. Jacobs eliminated the Dan Gerstman team in the loser’s bracket. Only two of the original top 16 seeds failed to make to today’s action – No. 10 Steve Beatty and No. 13 Amos Kaminski.

Jenkins, DeYoung set pace in Women’s Pairs

Gromova-Ponomareva

Bronia Jenkins of Vero Beach FL and Bernace DeYoung of Miami posted the best score in the opening round of the Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs. The duo led the field of 83 pairs by scoring 61.50% in the first qualifying session and 63.28% in the second. In second place going into today’s two-session final are Victoria Gromova and Tatiana Ponomareva of Moscow, Russia, who won the contest in 2012.

Dwyer earns Grand LM title

Kevin Dwyer
Kevin Dwyer

Kevin Dwyer of Melbourne FL is one of the ACBL’s newest Grand Life Masters. Dwyer recently topped the 10,000-masterpoint milestone, one of the two requirements for the Grand LM title. The 26-year-old had already achieved the other requirement: winning an NABC+ contest or its equivalent. Dwyer won the Grand National Teams Championship Flight earlier this year, and in 2013, he captured the Baldwin North American Pairs Flight A title. In 2011, Dwyer was a member of the winning squad in the U.S. Bridge Championships, commonly known as the
Team Trials. Dwyer also has a gold medal from his victory in the 2013 World Youth Open Team Championship.
