Meltzer rallies for Senior KO victory

The team captained by Rose Meltzer, trailing by 35 IMPs at the half, came through with a 37-3 third quarter on their way to a 99-94 win in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams. The runners-up were led by Gaylor Kasle. Meltzer played with John Mohan, John Sutherlin, Dan Morse, Ron Smith and Steve Garner. Kasle’s teammates were Larry Kozlove, Mike Passell, Neil Chambers, John Schermer and Marc Jacobus. The victory was the second in the event for Meltzer and her partner, Mohan. Morse has now won it four times, Sutherlin three. After pulling to within 1 IMP with the big third quarter, the Meltzer team won a close fourth set 35-29 for the win.

Chinese pair out front in Blue Ribbon Pairs

Jian Wei Li and Boang Xiang Zhang, propelled by a 73.22% game in the second qualifying session of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, will start today with a lead of 63.83 matchpoints. Their carryover is 192.50. Ross Gravel and Howard Weinstein, lying second, enter today’s play with 128.67. Top today is 77. The leaders are from Guandong, China. In third are former Junior players Owen Lien, Detroit, and Zach Brescoll, Charlotte NC.Blue Ribbon first qualifiers

Friedman, Lourie lead Women’s Pairs

Sandrea Friedman of Flushing NY and Ora Lourie of Hypoluxo FL take a slim lead into today’s two final sessions of the Whitehead Women’s Pairs. Their carryover score of 32.23 is just ahead of t he 29.05 posted by Emily Harrell of Shoal Creek AL and Benedicte Cronier of Paris, France. In third are Lynda Nitabach, North Plainfield NJ, and Sandra Rimstedt, New York City. Nitabach was captain of the winning squad in the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams on Monday
