Schwartz rallies for Open BAM victoryDenver 2015 Mitchell winners

The team captained by Richard Schwartz, in third place with a session to go, scored 18 out of 26 in the second final to win the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams by 1.09 points. Their final score was 36.75 to 35.66 for the runners-up, captained by Vytautas Vainikonis. Schwartz played with three members of the team that won the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams last fall in Providence and the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams this spring in New Orleans: his partner Allan Graves, Boye Brogeland and Espen Lindqvist. New team members Huub Bertens and Daniel Korbel both won their first North American titles. Vainikokis, of Lithuania, played with Olanski Wojtek, Boguslaw Gierulski, Jerzy Skrzypczak and Piotr Pawel Zatorski, all of Poland, plus Israeli Ron Pachtmann.

Sternberg Trophy goes to NitabachDenver 2015 Stenberg winners

Lynda Nitabach’s team entered the second day of the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match with a five-board carryover. Posting 15.5- and 16-win sessions on Tuesday, they held off their stalkers to take the event by almost two boards. Their total score was 35.00. Nitabach, of North Plainfield NY played with Sandra Rimstedt, Cecilia Rimstedt, Ida Groenkvist, Janice Seamon-Molson and Tobi Sokolow. The NABC title is the first for Nitabach, Sandra Rimstedt and Groenkvist. Second place went to the team captained by Barbara Ferm of Dallas. Ferm played with Juanita Chambers, Migry Zur Campanile, Jill Meyers, Victoria Gromova and Tatiana Ponomareva.

Meltzer, Kasle in Senior KO final

There will be a new champion in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams this year. The team captained by Rose Meltzer took out the two-time defending champions led by Vinita Gupta 114-101. Meltzer survived a furious rally by Gupta, surviving despite a 40-10 fourth quarter for Gupta. In today’s final, Meltzer will face the team led by Gaylor Kasle, 141-121 winners over the Jerry Helms squad. Meltzer is playing with John Mohan, Steve Garner, Ron Smith, John Sutherlin and Dan Morse. Kasle’s teammates are Larry Kozlove, Neil Chambers, John Schermer, Marc Jacobus and Mike Passell.

Hoyos, Bernal ahead in 10K IMP Pairs

Carlos Hoyos of Bogota, Colombia, and Francisco Bernal of Miami FL will take a carryover lead of 10.16 IMPs into today’s final two sessions of the 0-10K IMP Pairs. In second are D. Lionel O’Young of Walnut CA and Kou-Ping Cheng of Saratoga CA.

1) Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs

The Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks with the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs in the summer and the Platinum Pairs in the spring as the most prestigious — and toughest — pair events on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs and Platinum Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions.
