Qualifications came to a conclusion in both series after two days and 100 boards. The leading pair in the open pairs continued at a steady pace to keep the first place for Ireland: Adam Mesbur and Nick Fitzgibbon.Catherine d’Ovidio and Nathalie Frey

Catherine d’Ovidio and Nathalie Frey (France and Monaco) finished strongly to gain the lead ahead of Valérie Labaere (Belgium) and Renata Saporta (France) in the ladies pairs.

Disappointment came from the three pairs who won the Venice Cup for France, not making the cut, including the hot favorites Sylvie Willard and Benedicte Cronier.

Last board – No 100 – was a dramatic one. « Normal » contract was 6 hearts or 6 diamonds but with the king of diamond on side some courageous pairs bid up to 7 diamonds and made.

So, Nick Sandquist and Tom Townsend (England) seized their last chance to qualify on this winning finesse while Andrey Gromov and Alexander Dubinin (Russia) will have to play the final B when their opponents scored 1440.
