Day 1:

After the first 4 of the 10 total rounds, Iceland is first in the Open and Norway is first in Ladies. Below the results. Click Here to see all the results match by match.

In the Round 3/10 the BBO VG broadcasted the Match where Iceland defeated Denmark: 44-38. In one of the tables, for Denmark were playing Dennis (son) and Morten (father) Bilde members of the winning Vanderbilt 2013 team, in the other table their mates were M. Schaltz and L. Blakset.

We rescued a striking hand from this match:

Dennis Bilde in North opened his hand with a 1 bid, East mentioned his hearts with 1 and Morten doubled. Dennis with his 1NT showed a minimum balanced hand, and his father closed the 3NT game.

East lead his fourth heart, Dennis won the trick with dummy’s J and let run the 8 when West played a little diamond. Adalsteinn won with his J and after a moment, made the mistake of returning the 3, as you can see the club return defeats the contract immediately.

Dennis won with dummy’s A and when he saw West pitching a spade he began to develop an endplay. He continued with a diamond to his A, watching East’s K and another diamond to West’s Q… at this point West only had spades and clubs.

West played his 6, and Dennis played his A to continue playing the 10 pitching a spade from dummy, and the 6 playing a club from dummy, West played two clubs, Dennis continued with the K, West increasingly uncomfortable played a spade.

The 4 cards end-position was:

Now Dennis played the K and another …West was endplayed and 9 tricks well deserved for the young Bilde.

At the other table the contract was 3NT  by South. Blakset lead his partner’s suit, and declarer won the trick in his hand with the J. Declarer continued with a diamond and M. Schaltz won the trick with his J. But now Martin returned a club to defeat. Martin’s 9 was covered by declarer’s 10 and West J won the trick…Blakset returned his 5. Declarer won with his K, but  failed to win the contract.

The board gave Denmark a much needed 13 IMPs.
