Michielsen, Zia win Nail LM Pairs

Marion Michielsen and Zia Mahmood, in third place to start play in the two final sessions of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs, had two solid sessions to win the event by 75.17 matchpoints on a top of 64. Second place went to Tom Hanlon, Dublin, Ireland, and Leslie Amoils, Toronto.

The victory is the first for Michielsen in a major open competition. She has won four North American championships in women’s events. The Dutch star, now living in Sweden, won gold medals in the Mixed Teams and Women’s Teams at the 2014 Red Bull World Bridge Series in Sanya, China. She has numerous European titles to her credit.

Michielsen earned a law degree in the Netherlands but doesn’t practice because of her busy bridge schedule and the differences in Swedish and Dutch laws.

Zia has now won the Nail event six times, including victories with Hugh Ross in 1990 and 1991. He has won four world championships. The winners scored 61.66% in the first final session and followed with 56.94% in the evening session.

Weinstein bounced from Senior KO

In yesterday’s round of 16 in the Baze Senior KO Teams, all of the top seeds advanced except for the No. 2 squad captained by Howard Weinstein who lost to Serge Chevalier’s 18th-seeded team, 139-124. Mike Levine’s team (No. 8) narrowly defeated Lew Finkel’s squad (No. 9), 103-102.
