Statement by the German Bridge Federation
Two members of the German Bridge Federation (DBV), Alexander Smirnov and Josef Piekarek, have admitted to violation of the ethical principles of bridge. No details of their violations have been made known yet, but it is to be assumed that the violations took place both in their home country, and while representing their country and their federation in international competition, as well as possibly in other jurisdictions.
Nothing justifies unethical conduct and DBV condemns it strongly. DBV is deeply embarrassed and apologizes to all opponents that were damaged by its two members’ misconduct. Since qualification for the Bermuda Bowl 2015 was achieved with the help of illegal means, DBV has immediately withdrawn its team from these championships.
The relevant authorities within DBV will hear this case in accordance with federation jurisdiction.
As these violations also occurred during events held under the auspices of other bridge federations, DBV plans to work with other international bridge bodies regarding issues of appropriate sanctions. In addition, DBV plans to work intensively to implement measures and procedures in the hopes of avoiding events such as these from ever happening again. DBV is committed to the principle:
[box]Ethical conduct at the bridge table is of utmost importance and without any qualification more important than titles and success.[/box]
Ulrich Wenning
President of the German Bridge Federation on behalf of the Board of DBV
