The 2015 Southamerican Bridge Championships will select two teams for each category; Open, Ladies, and Senior  to represent the Zone 3 for the 2015 Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and d’Orsi Cup, to be held in Chennai, India from September 26 through October 10th.
Monday May 11 was the kick off of the South American Bridge Teams Championship in all its categories. In the Open after the first 4 matchs of the 14 that will be played in the qualifying stage, Chile is leading, with Argentina second and Brazil third.
Plus Sizes
In Buenos Aires finding any size bigger than 46 for teenagers is something to be pursued to death, so much so that in 2005 a law forced clothes shops to have for sale the following sizes: XL and XXL … it should be noted that they are equally hard to find. In bridge you could say that there is a parallel, it is easy to find double-digit swings: 10, 11, 12, 13 … but it is almost impossible to find plus-size swings as: 17, 19 …
However in the opening rounds of the South American Teams Championships several large sizes appeared and that is why today we will rescue them from anonymity … because as we saw Buenos Aires is not very adept to them.
May 11th 2015
1st RR Match, Uruguay beats Brazil 44-34, 17 of which were generated in Board 12:
North opened 2, Graña began with a waiting 2, but when Jacubovisk showed 5 or more hearts, his 3 generated space for a slam exploration…final contract 6 done = 1430.
At the other table Chagas also opened with a 2 bid, but here Bobby Martinez from Uruguay  interrupted the dialogue with an aggressive, not vulnerable, 3.
Villas Boas showed his heart suit and Rossolino raised the bet to 5.
Chagas with no room to investigate…decided to dib 7 … and was one down for a Plus Size of 17 IMPs for Uruguay.
1st RR Match, Chile 86 – Peru 4, 16 of which were generated in Board 4:Â
Caracci opened 1, and when he heard his partner’s 2 natural response, he showed his diamond singleton and 4 cards club support  with a 4 splinter,  after some cue-bids and a classic Blackwood, they landed in the club slam. The only lead that defeats the contract is a heart. But here King chose to lead K and declarer scored 12 tricks.
 Chile = 1370.
At the other table Jackson-Pimentel (Peru) chose to play the spade slam.
Although he doubled the 5 response to the aces question, Pacareu led an aggressive 8, giving the declarer a chance to win the hand … Jackson played the heart A and sealed the contract fate to one down…
Result a 16 IMPs Plus Size for Chile.
3rd Match, Argentina defeats Perú 82 to 12, 19 of them were generated by this board.
 Board 12:Â
Lambardi opened 1 and when the partnership learned that they both had balanced limited hands chose to play a NT partscore.Â
At the other table North also opened with 1, but here Lucena showed his spade suit and this began the debacle…
Pimentel doubled to show the other suits and values. Pellegrini redoubled to show his 9 points. Jackson passed showing a minimum hand, but when his partner reopend with 2NT, North thougth that someone was lying, and for sure it wasn’t his partner, and he decided to investigate the slam possibilities…all what they found was a 19 IMPs Plus Size for Argentina.
There were several Plus Sizes more but we will talk about them in another occasion…
