John Diamond and Geoff Hampson started the day on Friday in fourth place in the Silodor Open Pairs. They wasted little time in roaring into the lead, then cruised to the championship with two 66% games.

On a 64 top, their margin of victory over runners-up Zach Grossack and Richard Budd was 4.34 boards. Diamond was captain of the No. 3 seed in the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. The team – Hampson, Brian Platnick and Eric Greco – lost on the second day of play. Platnick and Greco finished 13th in the Silodor. The Diamond team – with Fred Gitelman and Brad Moss – won the Rosenblum Cup at the World Bridge Championships in Philadelphia in 2010.

They are both members of the Chinese women’s team . In the Women’s Pairs, they started the day tied for 13th, well off the pace, but had the monster game in the first final session to surge into first.

Semifinals set in Vanderbilt KO

Top seed Team Monaco will face No. 5 Carolyn Lynch in the semifinal round of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. In the other match, No. 2 Nick Nickell will go head to head with the Mark Gordon squad. Monaco has played four handed because of the departure of captain Pierre Zimmermann because of a family emergency. Despite that handicap, the team had an easy time against the Andrew Gromov squad, winning 150-56. Lynch, Monaco’s semifinal opponent, earned the spot by dispatching No. 4 Martin Fleisher 142-103. No. 2 Nickell led throughout against the Jim Mahaffey (npc) squad in a 156-85 win. No. 6 Gordon, originally seeded 11th, toppled the Paul Fireman team 162-137. The event concludes on Sunday.

The runners up, Erli Zhou from Menlo Park CA and Zhou Wang from Philadelphia PA, hoped their 64.50% second final session would be enough to slide into the top spot. It wasn’t.
