The Slava Cup in honor of the disappeared Russian bridge player, Slava Grinuk, has become one of the most prestigious events in Russia. This year many of the best players in the world are going to be participating in the 2013 Slava Cup: Click Here for this year participants list.
This tournament is the kick off for a team that has joined to participate of the next cycle of the American Nationals 2013: Bocchi-Madala, Gromov-Dubinin, Buras-Narkiewicz and that is already generating a lot of expectations in the bridge world.
Slava Grinuk was born in 1970 and died in 1999. When asked who was Slava, Vladimir Ivanov, from Moscow told the following story: “Slava Grinuk was a bridge player from Moscow. He died very young of cancer, and his friends, who were not bridge players, decided that the best thing they could do to remember him was to establish an Annual Bridge Tournament that bear his name. ” These friends sponsor the event each year.
The thing is that the same people are who today continue sponsoring the event although sponsorean they dont play and will ever play bridge. This year the Slava Cup 2013 venue is the Danilovskaya Hotel from 22- 24 February 2013.
The evento consists of two torunaments: a team and a pairs tournament.
Team tournament
The team tournament consists of two stages. On the first stage the teams play a complete round-robin qualifier. The result of each match shall be calculated in IMP and then converted into VP in accordance with the official scale of World Bridge Federation. If two teams are tied with the same number of VP at the end of round-robin, the tie shall be broken according to the IMP balance in the match between the two tied teams. As next criteria the total amount of IMPs will be used. At the end of the round-robin qualifier the first four ranked teams will play semifinal and final, the other teams could take a part in the consolation tournament. The winner of the round-robin qualifier chooses the opponent for the semifinal among the 2 – 4 places. Then the winners of semifinals will play a final to determine the title; the losers will play a match for third place.
Pair tournament
The tournament will be organized as a “Swiss pairs” tournament and will consist of 15 8-board rounds. The line-up in the first round will be made in accordance with the sport grade, by the principle “first with medium”, in the last two rounds the first place will play strictly against the second place, the third – strictly against the four, the fifth – strictly against the sixth etc. The result of each board will be calculated in IMP and then the total amount of IMP in each round will be converted into VP in accordance with the scale “Sunday Times” 60:0 where 1 IMP = 1 VP, so it is not possible in one round to win or to lose more than 30 IMP. Average plus or minus are, respectively, equal plus or minus 3 IMP.
