Vilnius Cup 2013: The Final

 The 2013 Vilnius Cup Festival was played in Lithuania and on Thursday August 29th, were played two pairs events the: Commercial Pairs and Mixed Pairs. Every year many of the best european players participate in the Open Teams event.

  Sunday September 1st was played the Open Teams Final: Teams Real vs Kalida.

Team Real: Alexander Dubinin, Andrey Gromov, Eugeniy Gladish & Mikhail Krasnosselski.

Team Kalida: Janusz Kalida, Apolinary Kowalski, Lech Ohrysko y Jerzy Russyan.

The final was two sets of six boards each. In the first two boards of the first set, Kalida team added 22 IMPs, increasing the lead 1 IMP more next board but the Real team added 22 IMPs in two boards, so the set ended with only 1 IMP difference. In the last 6 boards set Team Real added other 22 IMPs to win the match and to stay with the Vilnius Cup 2013.

 The two boards that added 22 IMPs for the Real Team were two Kalida’s defensive mistakes.

 In Board 16 both tables developed the same bidding sequences arriving to a 3NT contract although both pairs had a 5-4 heart fit.

 After a 1NT opening bid by South, North transfered to heart and closed the game in 3NT showing a balanced hand, in both rooms South chose to pass with a flat 4-3-3-3 hand. 

 Kalida lead his 6.

 Declarer won the trick with dummy’s J to continue with the 5, to West K covered by the A. Here Kalida erred when he continued playing A and another …cutting communications with his partner, who couldnt put him in when he won the K trick and so declarer developed his ninth trick and got home his 3NT contract.

In the other room, the lead was also a club, but this time West chose the 10. Again the jack won the trick, but this time declarer chose to play the A and another heart that East won with his king to play a club, East played his A and continued with another club. But now he had his A to get in, and after some tricks when he won the first spade trick he played his clubs for 1 down and 10 IMPs for his team.

In Board 17 after North’s 1 opening bid, N/S quickly arrived to a spade game. All leads defeat the contract,  declarer has to lose: 2 hearts, 1 diamond and two clubs. 

In one table Ohrysko in East lead a trump, declarer played a little one from dummy, West played little too, and North won the trick with his 9, to continue with the 5, East played little, dummy’s Q and West covered with his A.

North played his K when West returned his 6, East played his A and erred playing another , allowing declarer to win the trick with his 10. North continued playing a trump round, eliminating all the defense trumps. Played his high heart and a club to East K, now J was good to pitch his diamond loser…winning his contract.

At the other table the lead was the 2, and when declarer played the Q from dummy West covered with his king to return 9, North played his K and east his A, to continue with a passive diamond. Declarer played the ace, two trump rounds, and a club to the queen covered with the A.

West played another heart, East won the trick with his jack covering declarer’s 10. The K was the last defense trick for two down and 11 IMPs for the 2013 Vilnius Cup Champion.
