16/02/2017: ZIA MAHMOOD’S TEAM WINS THE DAY!

Thrilling finish in the Cavendish teams!

Team Mahmood (Demuy, Hurd, Mahmood, Weinstein) was leading by 24 versus Wigoder (Klukowski, Pszczola, Wigoder, Zatorski) after the first of the three segments of the Final.

Wigoder reduced their disadvantage to seven during the second segment and to an only imp during the third round. With one board to go, Mahmood was leading by a single imp. The last board was not good for Wigoder and a sigh of relief for Mahmood‘s supporters.

A Wonderful Auction !

Once the teams tournament had finished, the players were invited to a cocktail party in the Hotêl Méridien. The reception was also an agreeable setting in which to hold the auction for the pairs who will be starting their competition this morning. Jean-Charles Allavena congratulated the winners of the teams event, Team Mahmood, before explaining how the bidding was to take place. “We will not be putting all the pairs in the auction this evening. We have chosen those who are the most likely to put up a good fight during the competition.” And the fight was already on at the auction! Animated in turn by Christina Lund Madsen and Zia Mahmood, it created many a set to! By whom? Pierre Zimmermann, Gus Hansen, Alfredo Versace and Romain Zaleski were the most lively bidders. Helgemo-Helness was the pair who attracted the most bids – finally Pierre Zimmermann won the day over Alfredo Versace at 26.000 euros. The Rimstedt juniors saw Gus Hansen go up to 16.000 euros. You can find the details of the prices for each pair on this page. Who got a good deal? We’ll find out on Sunday evening.
