Madala showed, his 5 spades, and Bocchi chose to play a comfortable 3NT. East lead his 7.

Bocchi played a little one from dummy and Zimmermann his Q, Bocchi covered with the A and begun to develop spade tricks, playing his: Q. Multon played his K and declarer a little one. Multon knew his partner couldnt have the J, he played the Q in trick 1, but decided to establish the heart suit and returned a heart. Bocchi won, played a spade to the A, continued with the J and ended playing his 5 clubs…for 9 tricks.

Nunes offered different choices of games, Fantoni chose NT.

Here Lauria also lead a heart, but he chose a different one: 9.

After dummys card, Versace played his Q and Fantoni hold up, planning to cut the defense communications and hoping for a friendly club and spades distribution…Versace continued playing hearts, declarer played his J, Lauria won with the K and returned a heart to Fantoni’s A. Declarer continued with 5 clubs rounds. This is the 5 cards final position:

Fantoni played the Q, Lauria his K, A from the table, to continue a little diamond…Versace played his 3 and Fantoni his K…for two down and 13 IMPs to Italy.

In the next 5 boards, Monaco added 3 IMPs & Italy 10. Next swing was for Monaco:

Fantoni used the 3 to double,  (3 = 4-fit, 10-11) showing a good lead and the suit, these gave his partner the opportunity to sacrifice: 5. The italian chose to double instead of playing 5. Declarer was only one down = 200, this cost Italy 10 IMPs. Kit Woolsey who was commenting at the table wrote:  Anyway, not a victory for the artificial 3 call showing support.  In the next Board Monaco returned 10 IMPs.

Fantoni – Nunes didnt stop till the slam, Nunes chose diamonds.

Kit wrote:  Actually 6 turns out to be more treacherous on the lie of the cards.

Lead: 2

Fantoni played dummy’s A, unbloqued the club suit (A y K), a diamond to the A, pitched the heart looser in the Q. Now was diamonds time. Fantoni played a little diamond and when West played a little one he played the Q, when he saw East pitch a heart, he knew he was down.  I guess he knew that a spade contract was easier and that if the italians had play it…the hand was really expensive … must have been relieved when he found out that Bocchi-Madala had played a spade game the board gave 11 IMPs to Italy.

The board 13 was pass out in one of the tables. In the other Bocchi scored 2+3=150 and added 4 IMPs for Italy.

After Bocchi’s 2 weak opening bid, Madala chose to play a 3NT game.

Zimmermann lead a little diamond, the 3, the J and the A. Madala played his A and his second heart. After winning the trick, West made the only return, to hold declarer in 9 tricks,  the A, the defense made his high clubs and Madala claimed 9 tricks = + 400.

Fantoni chose to play 4…and Nunes received a 9 lead.

Declarer played the 10 from dummy and that won the trick. Fantoni continued running the Q…Versace won with his K and played A and ..for 1 down.
