The very first match for Argentina Youngsters was against Poland, one of the favorites to win the competition. The match ended Poland 50-Argentina 20, but it would have been an even worst result if the Argentine player Santiago Rueda wouldnt have catched with his bare hands the polish bulldozer and stopped a vulnerable slam.

Evidently Santiago knew that the match did not come very well (35 to 4 for Poland) and when he saw his hand and heard North and East Passes, he also knew something big and vulnerable was coming!. So he took the bull by the horns and opened 1♣ … his partner was a passed hand, he was not going to go very high and perhaps its action would help him to stop the looming black cloud …
West had no choice but to double and North showed in transfer his spades. East doubled, Ruedita passed and West declared the heart game … final contract. Poland made 12 tricks and scored 680. It was a pity that in the other table the other Argentine couple had an unfortunate misunderstanding and the hand cost 13 IMPs… Well done Santiago!
