Grossacks lead Platinum Pairs
Brothers Adam Grossack and Zachary Grossack of Newton MA begin today’s semifinal round of the Kay Platinum Pairs in the pole position after topping Friday’s qualifier. The Grossacks scored 57.89% in yesterday’s afternoon session and added a 62.34% effort in the second to give them a one-board carryover lead. In second are Jeff Meckstroth of Clearwater Beach FL and Thomas Bessis of Paris, France. The duo is consistent: They were in second place in after the opening round in last year’s Platinum Pairs also. Lying third are Alan Sontag of Gaithersburg MD and David Berkowitz of Boca Raton FL.
IMP Pairs: Morse, Sutherlin in front
Texans Dan Morse and John Sutherlin lead the field of qualifiers in the Lebhar IMP Pairs. Morse and Sutherlin scored 40.39 IMPs in the Friday’s first session and added 61.21 IMPs in the second session to finish just ahead of Californians Mark Itabashi and Peter Gelfand. In third are Detroit-area players Subhash Gulati and Kiran Gulati.
Gates excels in 10K Swiss qualifier
The squad led by Microsoft chair Bill Gates topped the qualifying round of the 0-10,000 Swiss Teams, scoring 119 victory points in yesterday’s two-session opener. Gates is playing with Sharon Osberg and teammates Richard Friesner and Eric Robinson. Narrowly in second is Ellen Kozlove’s team who scored 118 VP in the qualifying round. Kozlove’s lineup is Ralph Letizia Jr., Michael Wolf and Lee Bukstel. Teams captained by Alan Popkin and Andy Avery are tied for third-fourth.
