(1) Weak jump overcall
Although it is unappealing to sell out to
the opposition when one of them has
advertised weakness, this is hardly a safe
position in which to reopen. A double would
be for takeout, a notrump bid natural and
strong. A bid in a higher-ranking suit than
the first would show both greater length in
the first suit and extra values. When
considering reopening action, positive
indicators include shortage in the enemy
suit, support for the others, reserves of
extra strength, and the ability to handle
the auction.

1) 2NT. This may not work well, with both a
thin main suit and a minimum (your bid shows
a very good 18 to a bad 20 points), but
partner will often have a little something,
enough for a successful part score or even a
game. With a bit less, you would have opened
1NT.
2) Double. You have support for the unbid
suits and partner might well have enough
hearts and overall strength to convert your
takeout double to penalty. Partnerships
employing negative (takeout) doubles will be
aware that East could have a pure penalty
double of 2
and be forced to pass.
3) 3
. Your high card strength is only
moderate but your playing strength is
excellent. 2
would be acceptable without
the
A but you do not need much more than
the two black jacks and three spades to have
a decent play for 4
. Some would risk 4
here, taking the pressure off partner.
4) 3
. Not strong enough for 3
, which would
suggest more in high cards. East will often
hold 7-8 points, no good suit. Pass and you
might find that both sides could make a low-level
contract. With both spade shortage and good
distribution, you should be quite safe in
bidding.
5) Pass. Your heart length should prove
useful on defence but your double would be
takeout, not penalty, so you cannot increase
the stakes. Your hand is at least a queen
shy of a 2NT reopening.
