A Grand Slam...but not a tennis one...

 by Ana Roth

The four Major tennis tournaments, also called the Slams are the most important tennis events of the year in terms of world tour ranking points, tradition, prize-money awarded, strength and size of player field, and public attention. They are the:

  • Australian Open

  • Roland Garros

  • Wimbledon

  • U.S. Open

Currently, both the Australian Open and the US Open are played on hard courts, while the French Open is played on clay, and Wimbledon is played on grass. The "Grand Slam" is the winning of all four Major tournaments in a single calendar year; however, it has also been used for many years now to refer to any of the major tournaments. The term come from the bridge game and was applied to tennis for the first time in 1933.

Agustín Madala play very good tennis, but not enough to win a Grand Slam, but talking about Bridge, he almost never miss one.

This weekend Agustín added a new title: the 2011 Brasilian Open Teams, playing with Diego Brenner and teammates: João de Deus Vaz da Silva Neto;  Mauricio Machado; Amilcar A. V. Botelho de Magalhães; Eduardo S.N.Barcellos. After winning the Qualifier Round Robin, his team had to battle for 2 more days against the other 3 qualified teams to reach the Brasileirao 2011 and for sure this Bridge Grand Slam, that gave his team 16 IMPs, help them.

In Madala´s table, the lead was the A, Brenner ruffed in the dummy, played the J but when West didn't cover, he played his A and continued with the 4, when East played a little club, he played the 9...ball on the line...trick...he continued with the A and claimed...while Opps were asking for the Hawk-eye...A great bidding and play from Madala/Brenner...
