A Willinken´s Uppercut

July, 15 2011

Last week we learned that since 2012, Levin-Weinstein would not be part of the team Fleisher.

Fleisher's team, which will USA1 over the next Bermuda Bowl, in October 2011 in Veldhoven (NED), did not rest on
their laurels and has already completed his team. Beginning with the Spingold 2012 ...  Michael Rosenberg and Chris Willenken will joined them

Michael Rosenberg, is a professional bridge player, and is known to have been a ZiaMahmood partner He is the author of the book, Zia and Me. It ranks as one of the best players in the world.

Williken Chris is a professional bridge player, and has
played with most of the best American sponsors...

Today in BBO we had the opportunity to kibitz
Chris and we could witness a very well-defended hand.

Willenken, playing in South, lead his 3 singleton. His partner won the trick with his A and switched to the 2, Chris won with the 10, cashed his A and continue with his J, partner won with his K. Now a diamond ruff...and the position was:

 Q 8

Q 9 8
K 6 4

9 7 2

10 5
A Q 7

 A K 10 6 4

 J 5

9 8 5 3 2

Chris returned his 4...only card for two down...His partner must ruff with his highest trump...and in this case declarer have to use one of his high honors: A or K...promoting Willeken´s J.

The funny thing was...that declarer played the 2...North begun to think...it seemed as if he didnt want to play the queen...While he was steel thinking, declarer asked for UNDO and changed dummys card, playing the 9...now North...didnt doubt and played his Q...and two down...

This defensive play is called Uppercut.

Uppercut: is a defensive play that involves one of the defenders ruffing high in the knowledge that an overruff by the declarer will result in the promotion of a trump card in his/her partner's hand into a winner. Thus, the technique presents a type of trump promotion.
