Slava Cup 2012 in Memory of Slava Grinuk

Minute of Silence by Ana Roth

Minute of Silence (Russian: Минута молчания) was a joint radio and TV program in the Soviet Union broadcast on at 6:00 pm on May 9, the day of the victory of the Soviet Union in the second world war. It was first broadcast on Soviet Central Television in 1965, 20 years after the Allied victory over Nazi Germany. Aside from the minute of silence itself the main part of the program was a solemn address, commonly known as The Minute of Silence, dedicated to all those who fell fighting the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. The program was started with the announcement "Attention, Moscow's listening and watching!" by the Soviet radio voice Yuri Levitan, famous for his announcements during World War II. The very "minute of silence" was sounded with the toll of the Moscow Kremlin bells. The address was initially narrated by a well-known Soviet radio commenter and actress Vera Enyutina. The TV version was showing the flame on the background of a wall with the text "To the Memory of the Fallen." Due to its solemnity the address was informally known as "the prayer". (Source: Wikipedia)

Slava Grinyuk (slava is Russian for ‘fame’) was a talented Russian bridge player, who died an untimely
death in his thirties. Annual tournaments in his memory have been held in Moscow since 2003. In 2007, the Slava Cup Memorial attracted a number of leading bridge players from France, Italy and Poland.
The winners were World and European champions Fulvio Fantoni and Claudio Nunes. The then WBF President José Damiani also played in the tournament, giving it even greater status. He praised the event, noting, in particular, that it was perhaps the most high-standard bridge competition ever organized in memory of a deceased friend. The Russian participants named it the best bridge event
held in Russia in 2007 and it still is. (Source: Slava Cup 2012 Bulletin 1).

The 2012 Slava Cup was played feb; 16 - 18 and surely if it had been played May 9 at least one russian participant would have remembered Минута молчания...and would have been able to save him a terrible headache...

Lauria lead the K, his partner won the trick with his A to return a club. Declarer won the trick with dummy's A and played a heart, covering West´s K with his A. When he followed playing the J he could observe East pitching a little spade and West winning the trick with his Q. Versace left his hand playing a club, and Lauria won it with his K, to continue with the Q, Versace pitched a diamond, Gromov ruffed in his hand and continue with the A and another ruffed by Versace. Declarer couldnt avoid loosing two more heart tricks...4 down doubled: 1100.

At the other table Krasnossel, couldnt hear Kremlin´s bells...and opened 1, which caused Zaleski´s silence till the end of the bidding process.
