Italian Club Teams Championships: The Finals

The Coup de Grace

by Ana Roth y Fernando Lema

This year again the Allegra Team won the Italian Club Teams Championships. The teams that found their way to the finals were Allegra and Angelini:

ALLEGRA:  BOCCHI Norberto - DUBOIN Giorgio - GIUBILO Valerio - LAURIA Lorenzo - MADALA Agustin - SEMENTA Antonio - VERSACE Alfredo - ZALESKI Roman

ANGELINI: ANGELINI Francesco - CIMA Leonardo - FANTONI Fulvio - GAROZZO Benito - NUNES Claudio - PRIMAVERA Federico

2011, September 24, in the second set of the final match, the players positions were:

Close Room: N/S Cima-Garozzo for the Angelini Team and E/W Lauria-Versace for Allegra

Open Room: N/S Bocchi-Madala for Allegra and E/W: Fantoni-Nunes for Angelini

We don't know if it was coincidence or causality what get Benito Garozzo, the 84 years Italian legend, who won 10 Bermuda Bowls for Italy (1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1975)  in the same position that Agustín Madala, the new Italian bridge star, only 25 years old, and member for the first time of the Blue team that will represent Italy in the next Bermuda Bowl. The match started with Allegra 10 IMPs over Angelini and ended with Allegra 71 IMPs over his opps, we can say it was the "Coup de Grace" as Angelini any more could recover.

The first 2 hands gave Allegra 22 IMPs, lets see how:

After 3 Pass, Versace opened 1NT, Lauria transferred to heart and showed 9 or more cards in the majors with 3, Versace with his 3 showed his 3 spades cards, and Lauria's 3NT confirmed his majors: 5/4 . The lead was the 2 and dummy's 10 won the trick. Lauria continued with to the J, Cima won with his A and played the 3. When the declarer played dummy's A, Benito unblocked the suit playing his J...and generated the 9th trick for Versace. In the other room, the same contract was played, with the same lead and first 2 tricks but when Bocchi won the heart trick in the second round, he left his hand playing the Q and declarer couldn't do nothing to win the hand.

Lauria leaded his Q, Cima won with dummy's A and played diamond, Versace won with his A and returned his second heart, now the declarer had to lose 2 diamonds and three hearts. In the other room, with the same contract, the same lead, and the same second play, Nunes played a little diamond instead and Fantoni had to use his only hand entrance while Bocchi still had his heart stopper...another 12 IMPs for Allegra.

From the Hand 19 to the hand 25 Angelini recover 6 IMPs, but suffered a lose of 45 IMPs from hands 26 to 31. Lets see...

Lauria, opened 1, Garozzo overcalled his heart suit, Versace transferred to spades and Cima showed with a 4 fit-showing his heart support and good diamond suit. Lauria closed the game; 4, Garozzo passed and Cima defended to 5, Lauria doubled. Lauria would have done his 4, loosing only a club, a diamond and a heart: a diamond lead, the best one, doesn't defeat the contract because the player that has the A is also the one who has the K, Cima was one down, doubled.   Fantoni didn't open the hand, so Madala passed and Nunes opened with 2, Bocchi doubled and Fantoni used all the bidding space he could with 4. Madala continued with 5, and now Nunes adding his partner not opening hand to his weak hand, decided to defend and said 5, Agustín doubled. Only 10 tricks...and 9 IMPs for Allegra.

Versace, opened 1, Cima overcalled 1, Lauria doubled and Garozzo said 2NT (redouble with 4 cards support). When Versace passed, Cima closed the game, but that didn't stopped Lauria to bet 5 and Garozzo, in a poker style raise the bet inviting to slam with 5, but didn't use the break when his partner suggested stopping at the 5 level...

In the other room; the opening bid was a weak 1NT, and this generated a totally different bidding sequence, E/W never knew they had 10 diamond cards and let play 4:
