First day in the Cavendish Pairs events and first emotions. 56 boards have been played both in the open and the ladies. The qualification will end today with 44 more boards to play. Open players dream of a place in the first 22 to gain a seat for Final A on friday while only the first 12 will qualify in the ladies.
Looking at the ranking this evening, we have noted some important factors. In ladies pairs, the first two ones are transnational: a French-Belgian association leading Renata Saporta and Valerie Labaere well ahead of an Italian and American combination, Giorgia Botta and Lindsey Weinger. Pre tournament favorites Benedicte Cronier and Sylvie Willard are for the moment 14th just under the line.
In open pairs, an Irish pair is leading, Adam Mesbur and Nicholas Fitzgibbon, who have been playing together for about 40 years. They enjoy a good lead over Philippe Toffier and Jean-Jacques Palau from France. The highest bid during the auction Geir Helgemo and Tor Helness are in 10th position. There are exactly eight different countries represented in the first 10.
Cavendish in Monaco is really an international event.
