III Copenhagen Bridge Invitational – CBI Main Event, Sunday January 18 2015

The CBI Main Event is an invitational pairs event played in a cross IMP format through 19 Rounds, 8 boards in each round, 7 rounds played this friday, 6 rounds this saturday and 6 rounds on sunday. 

Last Day: Before the play begun Mark Horton in the Official Bulletin explained what happened in the event during the second day with these words:

As the sun shone outside the temperature in the playing room was rising. A series of challenging deals tested the stars to the limit and resulted in violent swings in all directions. Helgemo and Helness made some attempts to break away from the field; however Versace & Tokay ran downthe breakaway and mercilessly continued their climb with flawless bridge. They have established a gap of 224 IMPs down to the Irish heroes Tommy Garvey-John Carroll with Helgemo-Helness and the winners of the Danish qualification Thomas Vang Larsen-Lars Lund Madsen in pursuit and a gap of 227 IMPs down to 5th place.

Versace-Tokay in a day with almost no mistakes, were leading the event and were 224 IMps over the second pair.

After the first matchs of the day Versace-Tokay kept the lead but the gap had narrowed to 99 IMPs. The liders had lost 60 IMPs in the first round, while the partnership  from Ireland Tommy Garvey-John Carroll had added 85 IMPs. The two pairs in the third and fourth position had lost: -144 and -189 IMPs respectively. In the second match of the day, Versace – Tokay also lost some IMPs (25) but stayed as the liders because the pair from Ireland also lost but big: – 104 IMPs.

 In the third match Versace-Tokay continued as the event leaders, with a very small lose of 21 IMPs, the runner ups recovered 56 IMPs and entered the last round with a 52 IMPs gap. Thirds; Geir Helgemo – Tor Helness but almost 200 IMPs below.

And the last match arrived…

Versace-Tokay with a very good round added 183 IMPs, thus finishing an excelente three days job, and winning the event with 880 IMPs, 145 IMPs over the second pair John Carroll – Tommy Garvey that finished with 635 IMPs. Geir Helgemo and Tor Helness stayed in their third position.
