The Sportaccord Mind Games ended in Beijing. The last bridge event was the individual competition, and with it fell the curtain of the third SportAccord Mind Sports Games since the bridge was the last discipline to award medals.
Cesary Balicki from Poland, won the Open, second was Thor Helness and third Haojun Shi. Little glory for Fantoni and Nunes, thirteen, and seventeen, respectively, who dominated in pairs and teams. The individual, for that matter, is much like a lottery: it is true that to win you have to play well, but it is also necessary that the two adversaries (and this is true even in pairs), and your partner collaborate. These are the top ten:

In the Ladies category, this afternoon the «The Star-Spangled Banner» is going to be heard as the U.S. Cheri Bjerkan was the one who won the Individual. Cheri Bjerkan is known on the international scene as she is among the winners of prestigious events. Second was the formidable Wenfei Wang, Bridge ambassador with Fulvio Fantoni, and the third also from China, Zhang Yu.
See you next year, the last of the four to be held under contract in China. Sport Accord has already announced that the show will continue, although it is not known whether it will be in China or some Arab States, or in any of the former Soviet republics or India … which are those that are among the candidates. SportAccord World Mind Games, defeating Poland’s Adam Zmudzinski Marcin Mazurkiewicz, Cezary Balicki, Krzysztof Buras, Krzysztof Jassem and Andrzej Narkiewicz. The bronze medals went to China, Zhang Bangxiang, Dai Jianming, Ju Chuancheng, Shi Haojun, Shi Zhengjun & Wang Weimin.
Senior on the very last board, with the USA, Carole Miner, Cynthia Balderson, Lynn Deas, Hjördís Eythórsdóttir, Rozanne Pollack & Cheryl Bjerkan finishing third. It was appropriate that each of the winning teams contained the Bridge Ambassadors here in Beijing, Fulvio Fantoni & Wang Wenfei.

Day2: ROUND ROBIN SUCCESS FOR EUROPEAN TEAMS:
In the Men’s series of the 2013 SportAccord World Mind Games Monaco and Poland reached the Gold medal round. Monaco made sure of their place by virtue of a handsome win in the first match of the day against the overnight leaders, while the Polish squad bounced back in the second match with a vital win against China that gave them a handy lead over their rivals for the other berth in the final. They needed it as, while they were losing badly to the USA, China scored a big win against Monaco.
In the Women’s series England won all three matches to overtake second placed USA and move to the top of the table. China was virtually certain of a spot in the final when they scored a decisive win over USA in the day’s opening match, but a huge loss to England meant they finished the Round Robin in second place.
Day 1: Friday, December 13, 2013
The European teams dominated play in the Open’s event on day one of the 2013 SportAccord World Mind Games. Poland won all three matches to race into a commanding lead ahead of Monaco. These two are well clear of China, while the USA, who lost all three matches by significant margins are already in an almost hopeless position in terms of reaching the Gold medal playoff. It was a different story in the Women’s event, where no team remained undefeated. China has a useful lead over the USA, but England and Israel are by no means out of contention.
Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2013 Sport Accord World Mind Games was a triumph. The entry of the Game’s flag and representatives of the athletes and referees was followed by the entry of the national flag of the People’s Republic of China and the flag of Sport Accord. The playing of the National Anthem of the People’s Republic of China and the raising of the flag was followed by the raising of the Sport Accord flag and the playing of its anthem. (A brilliant touch was the use of a wind machine to ensure the flags flew!). Then came a spectacular Arts Performance by the art troupe of the Beijing Sport University…
