6th Playing Day: What an exciting last day in all three divisions. The Girls event looked settled, with China 32 VPs behind fourth-placed Italy. But China gave Italian supporters some nervous moments by winning 25-5, 25-0 and 22-8 to finish only 4 VPs adrift. In the Youngsters, China looked well set with three rounds to go, but then lost 23-7 to Poland and 25-1 to Sweden. England had a middling day, with 18 from a bye and two 15-15 ties. Italy beat Singapore 25-4, but then lost to Canada by 17-13.Before the last round, the scores were England 251, Italy 249, China 239, with two to qualify. In the last round, China was not catching up. But then on boards 10-15 China scored 66 unanswered IMPs against Canada to move ahead of Italy into eighth place. Then Italy retaliated, gaining 28 IMPs over the last four boards to regain the last quarterfinal berth. England and Italy ended with 266, with China 2 points behind. The eighth spot in the Juniors was between Denmark and Singapore. Before the day began, Denmark led Singapore by 6 VPs. This margin widened to 11 after Round 17. But then Singapore crushed Argentina 25-0 to move within 3. In the last round, Singapore scored another maximum, this time over Egypt. And when Denmark defeated France by only 19-11, Singapore had made it. Now in the knockout stage we have 56-board quarterfinals and semifinals, and 80-board finals.

The players that didnt classify can participate in the: TRANSNATIONAL TEAMS

A seven-session Swiss Teams will be held on Thursday 2nd August and Friday 3rd August 2012. There is NO entry fee for the event.
If you have been knocked out in the qualifying event, then you will have Wednesday off for relaxing and sightseeing before this event begins. The event is open to all participants in the Juniors, Youngsters and Girls who have not qualified for the semifinals.

5th playing Day:  Situations in the three divisions are becoming clearer, with only three more rounds to be played on Tuesday. In the juniors, the top seven teams – Netherlands, Australia, Israel, France, USA1, China and Italy – look safe. The battle for the eighth quarterfinal berth will be between Denmark, Singapore, Bulgaria, Argentina and China Hong Kong. The same applies in the youngsters event, where Poland, France, Australia, Israel, Sweden, USA1 and China will probably qualify. England and Italy will fight for the eighth place. The four girls semifinalists are almost certain to be Netherlands, Poland, France and Italy. China, fifth, is 31 victory points behind Italy. But in bridge the unexpected can happen; perhaps a team will win three blitzes and leap up the field.

1st Playing Day: After last night’s enjoyable opening ceremony and dinner with musical ccompaniment, now we have got down to the serious business of trying to decide three world championships with the first of six qualifying days.

In the Junior event, two of the pretournament favourites, the Netherlands and Israel, are in the lead, just ahead of the host country, China. The two American teams are tied in seventh. In the Youngsters division, Australia and France are tied for first, five victory points ahead of England. In these tournaments, the top eight will qualify for the quarterfinals starting next Wednesday. In the Girls competition, the Netherlands leads from Italy. Then there is a 13 victory point gap to third-placed Indonesia. The surprise so far is that Poland, often the team to beat in this event, is fifth. Here, only four teams move into the semifinals.

The 14th World Youth Bridge Team Championships is being held in Taicang, a historic port city near Shanghai, in China, from 25 July to 4 August 2012. A quarter of a century since its original launch, the flagship competition of the WBF youth programme is expanded to accommodate a total of 20 zone-representative teams in each of the Junior and Youngsters series, and 14 teams in the Girls series. Another piece of good news is that with this edition the World Youth Team Championships returns to being again independently organized – the first time since 2006.

All Zones of the World Bridge Federation are invited to participate in this prestigious tournament with representative teams in each series. The host country is entitled to field one team in each series. Players in the Junior and Girls series may be up to 25 years old, while in the Youngsters series up to 20 years old.

The Championships consist of a qualifying stagesemifinals, a final and a playoff for third place in each series. The winners of the Junior series final will be the new World Junior Champions; they will receive the Ortiz-Patiño Trophy and silver replicas for each player and the non-playing captain. For the winners of the Youngsters series final there is the José Damiani Cup and replicas, in addition to the World Youngsters Champions title. This is the 14th event of the (Junior) series which was inaugurated in 1987 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a biennial competition, it was held in 1989 in Nottingham, Great Britain; in 1991 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA; in 1993 in Århus, Denmark; in 1995 in Bali, Indonesia; in 1997 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; in 1999 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, in 2001 in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2003 in St.Cloud-Paris, France, in 2005 in Sydney, Australia; in 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand; in 2008 in Beijing, China and in 2010 in Philadelphia, USA.

The host country – The Netherlands, Great Britain & USA – won the Championship on the first three occasions, but this tradition was broken in 1993 by Germany. In 1995, Great Britain became the first country to win the title twice. Denmark won the title in 1997 and Italy in 1999. In 2001, USA became champions for the second time; Italy followed suit in 2003, but USA took the lead in 2005 and conquered the world title for the fourth time in 2006! 2008 marked Denmark’s second victory, while in 2010 a new winner emerged: Israel.

The World Youngsters Team Championship is held this year for the fifth time. In 2004, in New York, only Europe and North America took part, and the first winners were Poland. Israel won the 2006 edition and France in 2008, but Poland came back in 2010 winning the title for the second time.

Finally, following an experimental launch in 2010, won by Poland, this year the World Girls Team Championship will be contested by representatives of all WBF zones, having at stake the Gianarrigo Rona Cup, donated by the WBF President.
