Women’s 2015 Online Festival
Anna Maria Torlantano reports that the WBF and BBO will host the 8th Spring World Online Women’s Bridge Festival from the 13th to the 19th of April, 2015. There will be two Pairs, two Individual and two Individual Robot Duplicate tournaments every day. Prizes include WBF Online Masterpoints, BBO Masterpoints and BBO$. The top-placing player and the partner of her choice will receive free entry to the Women’s European Pairs Championship in Tromsø, Norway this summer. You can find more information at: www.wbfwomensbridgeclub.org
ACBL Hall of Fame
The ACBL announced in New Orleans that Audrey Grant and Michael Rosenberg will be inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame at the Summer NABC in Chicago. Grant will receive the Blackwood Award for bridge accomplishments away from the table. She is one of the best-known authors and teachers the bridge world has ever known and has been responsible for bringing more players into the game than any other single individual.
Rosenberg, known as the expert’s expert, has a Rosenblum title and four silver medals in World Championship play, as well as 14 NABC wins. His other titles include the Gold Cup, Britain’s mostprestigious knockout championship, the Sunday Times Invitational, the Cavendish Pairs and the WBF’s Par Contest.
IBPA member Howard Weinstein has won the 2015 Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award. Weinstein will receive the award at the Summer NABC in Chicago, coincidentally his home town for decades before retiring to the southern states. Weinstein’s most famous act of sportsmanship occurred in the semifinal of the 2007 Bermuda Bowl in Shanghai, when he allowed an opponent to pick up what would have been a penalty card due to a revoke. Why? Weinstein had taken an inordinate amount of time to play his inelegant five notrump contract and realised that his tempo had contributed to his South African opponent’s mispick. There could be no more deserving recipient of the award.
North American Youth Championships
The annual NA Youth Championships will take place in Chicago from August 6 to August 8, 2015. Entry to the 2015 Youth NABC is free to ACBL members, and all participants must be ACBL members to participate. Youths from outside the ACBL can sign up at: www.acbl.org/join. All events are open only to youths 19 years of age and younger with fewer than 5000 ACBL masterpoints (or equivalent) as of June 15, 2015.
WBF World Youth Championships
The 4th Open World Youth Championships will take place in Opatija, Croatia, August 20-29, 2015. Events will be a Pairs Championship, a Swiss/KO Teams Championship and a Board-a-Match Teams Championship. The Championships are open to all players born on or after 1st January, 1990 (Juniors and Girls) or born on or after 1st January, 1995 (Youngsters) or born on or after 1st January, 2000 (Kids) in good standing with their own NBOs. Teams and Pairs must be made up of players from the same NBO. NBOs may send as many teams or pairs as they wish.
